By Chris Thomas, AAPP Foundation President

The calendar has flipped to 2023, and I am proud to announce a full slate of initiatives and changes for the AAPP Foundation.

Foremost, we are thrilled to share our first-ever AAPP Foundation Annual Report. The AAPP Foundation Board found it imperative, as fiduciaries of the AAPP Foundation, that we are transparent on how/where the money is generated and where the money is allocated. Thus, in the 2022 Annual Report, the AAPP Foundation Board of Directors is excited to share our successes from 2022, thank our 2022 donors, and provide transparency of our financials as an organization.

Only with your support, as donors, can we continue to exist as a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization offering grants and supporting strategic initiatives. We appreciate each and every one of you who made individual contributions, requested a corporate match or contribution from your employer, or paid it forward by purchasing items through AmazonSmile. Unfortunately, and as you may have heard, we were sad to learn that AmazonSmile was discontinued on February 20, 2023, but are thankful for the $1,247 that was received in total from this program.

Up next, we turn our attention to the AAPP Annual Meeting, taking place April 16-19, 2023 in Atlanta. The AAPP Foundation will be represented at the event with 6 grant recipient posters, two session sponsorships, a booth in the Centennial Ballroom foyer, and 28 student grant recipients! As always, we would love for you to stop by our booth and say hello.

Another important milestone for the AAPP Foundation is the ending of the “in kind” hourly staff donations from AAPP. Over the past 10 years since the Foundation was created, AAPP kindly donated staff time for the Foundation to evolve and grow. Today, with both organizations noting significant growth and increasing complexity, the AAPP Foundation Board felt it was time to be autonomous and begin paying for staff time in managing and growing the foundation. We are hopeful the members will recognize this as important step in the Foundation’s maturation as we continue to live our mission “to advance the psychiatric pharmacy profession by supporting research, scholarship, and practitioner development.” We will continue to strive toward our envisioned future of “a world where individuals with mental health disorders receive optimal care because psychiatric pharmacists are an essential member of the health care team.” And lastly, we continue to support and conduct initiatives defined by our core purpose:

  1. Demonstrate the value of psychiatric pharmacists
  2. Contribute to the development of future leaders in the profession
  3. Support new practitioners
  4. Support the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) as well as similar patient advocacy organizations

Additional information about strategic initiatives that we are supporting in 2023 is forthcoming. Thank you for trusting us with your donations as we work together to advance psychiatric pharmacy. As always, should you have any questions about the Foundation and our initiatives, feel free to contact me at cthcal@aol.com
